Fair coffee is joy

We roast fair trade organic coffee in a small town of Kostelec nad Labem in Central Bohemia (some 30 km from Prague): for cafés, company, community and individual consumption. It is packaged by hand by the handicapped. And we are happy not only about our freshly roasted fair coffee but also about the environment of the roastery, where we cooperate with the mentally and physically handicapped since 2013. Fair & Bio cooperative was established in 2011.

The story of our coffee

We support fair trade and decent work that’s why our products are Fairtrade certified. We care about our planet: vast majority of our coffees are grown in an organic way. We present the path from producers to consumers as transparent and the shortest possible. And we care about our society: that’s why we are a social enterprise and we give a chance to people who are challenged.

Our employees

75% of our employees are mentally or physically handicapped and they tell us their incredible life stories. Most of us are with us since the first years of the roastery, the work in our plant means a combination of benefits for them: income, meaningful work, enhancing their skills and training. We have workshops together as well as study visits to similar enterprises.

Cooperation across the continents

By being a coop we refer to the common form of enterprises in fair trade: most producers in the countries of the Global South are organised in coops. We believe economic structures based on mutual help like coops are significant contributors to sustainable development. And to close the value chain: we sometimes have the opportunity to host representatives of production coops or other social solidarity economy supporters from the countries o the global South.

Let’s do business together

We are not scared to try (old)new things: the roastery is cooperative which focuses from its nature on sustainable and democratic way of doing business. Cooperative form of our enterprise means transparent and collective decision-making as well as promoting social cohesion and creating space for active individuals. We are proudly acknowledging the 170+ years history of cooperatives in the Czech lands, which wasn’t lagging behind after the pioneers in the Western European countries.

Let’s talk and cooperate (without borders)

We co-organise public events where enduring sustainability is promoted: Fair markets and feasts in Prague, Food sovereignty forums or Social solidarity economy conferences and workshops. We are a member of Decent Company Movement Association of social responsibility and Union of Czech and Moravian Manufacturing Cooperatives. Internationally we are a member of RIPESS Europe (Network of Social Solidarity Economy). We participate at international gatherings with people from the social (and solidarity) economy sector, speak at EU hearings in Brussels and other congresses or seminars. What we seek is more cooperation across the countries of Central-Eastern Europe.
